Playing Some Male Felinity

Pet cats usually serve a practical purpose – to keep rodents out of the house. Europe once made the mistake of taking out its cat population because of its association to witches, so when the flee that contained the Black Death infested the rats, there was no cat to protect the humans. The rest, as they say, is history. But aside from such practicality, cats have a way of reconnecting people to their intimate selves.

Somehow the idea has been proliferated that a pet cat is best for young girls, because of its close similarity to the female character. Dualistic as it sounds, cats are very cuddling, meek, and expressive, and yet very ferocious as a carnivorous predator. Perhaps some women would disagree with the characterization, while others would take it as an affirmation of their sexuality. And though the cat is almost always associated with girls, there are a couple of reasons why the males should have a feline close to them, as a household pet.

1. The specie was domesticated in the ancient Egyptian civilization in honor of the goddess Bast, who showed herself in the form of a cat. Bast was believed to be honored as a solar and war goddess. Her name means ‘female devourer’ that guards and destroys enemies inside its territory, and such a characteristic is not exclusive to the domesticated dog. As a warrior, Bast was protector of the pharaoh. If one would adhere to the myths, then the presence of a cat brings about good health and protection to the head of the household. It sounds superstitious, yes. But it would never hurt to look at domesticated cats this way.

2. Studies show that young boys who grow up having pet cats learn to be more emotionally sensitive and more caring compared to their counterparts. They tend to be more observant of the unspoken communication, heeding body language in relating to others, which is useful in building their Emotional Quotients as individuals.

Older males, on the other hand, who have cats in their homes tend to be more expressive of their sexual side. Their relationships with women are often characterized by heightened sensuality, relating to the opposite sex in a more pleasing manner compared to other aggressive males. They are more able to understand the female’s silent signs of affection and irritation. These males tend to have qualitatively better relationships because of their exposure to pet cats.

3. Cats exude an aura of peace and space compared to pet dogs, who are more energetic and lively when with their masters. Cats are relaxed and even idle at times, and this is a reminder to males to slow down and contemplate once in a while. This is good for males living on the fast lane, so that they might find a moment or two everyday to find their center.

So perhaps, the next time you need to send a gift to a male friend, or your brother, or your dearest partner, a cat might be the best possible option. If he gives out a surprised look, just tell him to wait and see. The cat would give him more wonders than he could imagine, and sooner or later, he’d just thank you for the pleasant surprises that would come his way.
